MONSTER Exhibitionとは

怪獣（MONSTER）にインスピレーションを得たMONSTER展は、2011年の東日本大震災と津波を受けて2013年に開始されました。この展覧会では、災害の圧倒的な影響を反映した「怪獣」をテーマにしたアーティストの作品を紹介しています。
日本では、「怪獣」は自然の神秘性と畏怖の念を象徴する存在です。本展覧会では、この概念を基盤に自然災害の継続的な影響に向き合いながら、支援活動や深い考察を通じて発展を続けるダイナミックなアートプロジェクトとして展開してきました。

今日、大規模な自然災害、戦争、紛争、人為的な事件が世界中で発生し続けている中、この展覧会では、自然の神聖さと恐ろしさだけでなく、人間の内面の葛藤も表す「怪獣」というテーマも推し進めています。
この展覧会は、こうした多面的な視点を取り入れることで、人間と自然の深いつながりについて考えるプラットフォームを提供するとともに、回復力、復興、そして人間の行動が世界に与える影響についての対話を促そうとしています。

記憶の継承: 圧倒的な津波のメタファーとしての「怪獣」のテーマをひ引き続き継続し、災害の記憶を考えるきっかけを提供していきます。

芸術的表現の推進: アーティストがビデオ、絵画、彫刻などさまざまな表現方法で「怪獣」のテーマを自由に探求し、独自に再解釈する場を提供します。

支援活動への貢献: アート作品の売上の一部を災害復興や人道支援活動に役立て、被災地や困難に直面する人々への継続的な支援を目指します。

プロジェクトの進化: 災害や人間の内なる葛藤についての考察や、回復力の重要性を中心に据えつつ、展覧会を時代や状況に応じて進化させる取り組みを続けます。

The MONSTER Exhibition, inspired by “Kaiju” (MONSTER), was launched in 2013 in response to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. It showcases artists exploring the “Kaiju” theme, reflecting the overwhelming impact of the disaster.
In Japan, “Kaiju” symbolizes both the divine and the terrifying aspects of nature. The exhibition embraces this concept to address the ongoing effects of natural disasters, evolving as a dynamic art project with a focus on charity and reflection.

Today, as large-scale natural disasters, along with wars, conflicts, and human-caused incidents, continue to occur across the globe, the exhibition carries forward the theme of “Kaiju,” which represents not only the sacred and fearsome aspects of nature but also the inner struggles of humanity. By embracing these multifaceted perspectives, the exhibition seeks to provide a platform for reflection on the profound connections between humans and nature, while inspiring dialogue on resilience, recovery, and the impact of human actions on the world.

Objectives:

• Commemoration: Utilize art to preserve the memory of the disaster and encourage reflection, using “Kaiju” as a metaphor for the overwhelming tsunami.
• Artistic Expression: Provide artists with the freedom to explore and reinterpret the “Kaiju” theme through various mediums such as video, painting, sculpture, and more.
• Charitable Support: Donate a portion of artwork sales to disaster relief efforts, contributing to ongoing recovery from natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
• Ongoing Evolution: Continue to develop and adapt the exhibition as a dynamic art project while upholding its core themes of reflection, resilience, and charitable mission.

このプロジェクトのきっかけ

2011年、プロジェクト発起人の実家が津波にのみ込まれた際、アーティストたちから寄せられた支援の申し出をきっかけに「Recover and Buildプロジェクト」を立ち上げました。2013年に第1回MONSTER Exhibitionが開催されました。

当時のこのアートプロジェクトの目的は、アートの力を借りて、たくさんの人に集まってもらい、日々忘れてしまいがちな「あの日」のことを思い出すきっかけを作ることでした。

第1回MONSTER Exhibitionでは、せんだいスクール・オブ・デザインと東北大学の連携プロジェクトによりポスターを展示しました。被災地の膨大なデータを可視化することで一般の方にも被災地の状況をわかりやすく伝えることができました。

In 2011, when the home of the project’s founder was engulfed by the tsunami, offers of support from artists led to the launch of the “Recover and Build Project.” The first MONSTER Exhibition was held in 2013.

At that time, the purpose of this art project was to use the power of art to bring people together and create an opportunity to reflect on the events of “that day,” which are often forgotten in daily life.

During the first MONSTER Exhibition, posters were exhibited as part of a collaborative project between Sendai School of Design and Tohoku University. By visualizing extensive data from the disaster-affected areas, the project effectively communicated the situation in the disaster-stricken regions to the general public.

また、福岡を拠点に活動するクリエイティブ・ラボanno labの協力により、津波の高さを来場者に視覚的に体感してもらいました。多くの来場者から、「津波3mと言われてもピンとこなかったけど、これは油断できない高さだと理解できた。」「津波15mをイメージするのが難しかったが本当に恐ろしいことが起こったことがわかった。」など、津波の怖さを改めて知ってもらう機会となりました。

With the cooperation of anno lab, a creative lab based in Fukuoka, visitors were given a visual experience to grasp the height of the tsunami. Many attendees shared their impressions, saying, “I couldn’t quite visualize what a 3-meter tsunami meant, but now I understand how dangerous it is,” and “It was hard to imagine a 15-meter tsunami, but this helped me realize just how terrifying it must have been.” This initiative provided an opportunity for people to better understand the overwhelming power and danger of tsunamis.

会場の美しいブースデザインは、hannat architects（ハナト アーキテクツ）によるものでした。
会場がMONSTERを彷彿させるインスタレーションとなり、多くの人を惹きつけ会場に足を運ばせました。

The stunning booth design at the venue was created by Hannat Architects. Their design transformed the space into an installation reminiscent of a MONSTER, captivating visitors and drawing many people to the exhibition.
